OASIS DE SANTA MARÍA BACKPACKING TRIP
Between Cataviña and Bahía de San Luis Gonzaga we can find El Oasís de Santa Maria. It was discovered by the Jesuits in Baja California when they decided to established the last mission in Baja California, Mexico, in 1767.
This jewel of Baja is an adventure paradise for the aventurero who is looking for a backpacking trip with different types of landscapes, challenges, and history of Baja's penisula.
DAY 1: Tijuana to Cataviña (6-7 hour drive). (B, L & D).
Your 5 day journey begins when meet up at 6:00 a.m. in Plaza Las Americas and leave at 6:30 a.m. We travel to Ensenada around 8:00 a.m. and have breakfast. We will then drive to Cataviña, do check in at our hotel in order to leave our stuff and have lunch shortly after. After. We will do a general explanation about our three day backpacking trip and finally end the day by having a nice dinner before going to sleep.
DAY 2: Trek to Oasis Santa María Camp (28 kilometers). (B).
We will wake up by 5:00 am and enjoy the beautiful sunrise with a light breakfast and leave the hotel by 6:30 am and continue our journey towards Rancho Santa Inés were we will star the backpacking trip. Here is when we will embark our first trek and walk 28 kilometers through different desert landscapes until we get to the Oasis. After a long day of exploring and traveling we will prepare all our camping gear and have a cozy bonfire.
DAY 3: Trek to the Posa La Escuadra (4 kilometers).
During our second day of the backpacking trip we will pend the day exploring the oasis natural pools around the Posa La Escudara.
DAY 4: Trek to Bahía de San Luis Gonzaga. (12 kilometers). (D).
Rise and shine to breakfast, pack our camping gear and hike to Bahía de San Luis Gonzaga! were we will hike through a beautiful canyon and if we are lucky we will see the bighorn sheep, deer, and wild life animals. After a long hike our personal chauffeur will pick us and take us to the beautiful Alfonsinas Hotel at Bahía de San Luis Gonzaga On arrival at the hotel, we will have the rest of the day to eat and rest.
DAY 5: Bahía de San Luis Gonzaga to Tijuana. (6 hour drive). (B, L & D).
Head back home! On our way back to Tijuana we will stop at Ensenada, where we will have lunch. We will then continue our journey back home and drop everyone off at the border around 6:30 p.m.

Transportation (We have mexican / american federal touristic transportation permissions).
Meals as per itinerary (B=breakfast, L=lunch, D=dinner) and veggie option available. BACKPACKING FOOD AND ALCOHOL NOT INCLUDED!

Passport. (You may re-enter the US with a US birth certificate, ID and driver license, but it is always better to have your US visa or passport).
Hiking boots & confortable shoes and sandals for the beach at Bahía de San Luis Gonzaga.
Hat or cap.
Toiletries, chap-stick, sunscreen, baby wipes, ear plugs, hand sanitizer, etc.
5 liters of water. A good option is to carry a 3 liters in a hydration pack and 2 liters in 2 durable crush proof one-liter water bottle (reusable bottles save the planet).
Small towel (preferably something that dries fast).
Backpack (55 - 70 liters). Example: Osprey Atmos AG 65, Gregory Baltoro 65, etc.
20 degree Sleeping bag.
Thermorest, Sleeping pad, etc.
Light day pack.
Water proof bag for your electronics.
Light camping tent (Less than 5 pounds). If you are coming with a friend or relative we recommend you to share it.
Reusable plate, spoon, fork and knive.
Clothes is up to you! This is what we carry in our bags during the 3 days of the backpacking trip. 1 Short, 1 pants/pijama, 1 extra pair of wool socks, 1 extra boxer, 1 extra shirt, 1 rain jacket, 1 jacket and 1 thermal shirt.
PLEASE BRING ONLY ESSENTIAL THINGS FOR THE TREKING, YOU WILL CARRY EVERYTHING YOU TAKE!!!
Trip members should be in good physical condition. This hike is demanding, it’s important to be in good physical condition; We are going to walk 40-50 kilometers through rocks, rivers, and bushes, carrying 20 kilogram / 44 pounds in the back.
Elevation 567 meters.
COMFORT & ACCOMMODATIONS
- During the 1st and 4th day we will be staying at a hotel with all the necessary accommodations.
- During the 2nd and 3rd day we will camp, its necessary you bring your own camping gear. If you need something let us know! REI and ADVENTURE 16 rent backpacking gear for affordable prices.
- We will require everyone to practice the Leave No Trace Principles (see leave no trace principles).
It is important to know that in most of the locations that we will stay are small towns and there is no cellphone signal and no internet conection. You will be to contact your friends and relatives only when we get to the Hotel (Satellite phone/wifi). We know this may sound weird and sketchy but believe us, being disconnected from civilization, social medial, work, etc., it is the best part of the trip. :)
- If you don't have backpack, tent, sleeping bar or sleeping pack let us know!!! We can get you one for an extra fee. Also REI and ADVENTURE 16 (SAN DIEGO) rent backpacking gear for affordable prices.
- Minimum age is 16 years in good physical condition and with experience.
- Not recommended for participants with back problems.
- Vegetarian option is available, please advise at time of booking if required
- Accommodation options: During the hotel stay single travelers will share room with another traveler of the same sex and couples will have a rooms to themselves. If you want a single room there is an extra fee.
